In my novel, The Thrift Shop Diary, we are introduced to Ellie’s beautiful mother Sophie Avril McBride. Sophie is a fashionista par excellence who lives by her own twenty rules of dressing, affectionately referred to as S.A.M.’s Rules. 

1) Develop a look which matches your personality

2) Develop a look which works for your body-type

3) Dress for the weather

4) Dress in a manner appropriate to the occasion

5) Dress for the time of day

6) Focus on your hair, nails, and complexion as much as on clothing

7) Focus on maintaining your figure as much as on clothing

8) Don't overdo it

9) Pay more for shoes than clothes

10) Don't wear anything if it doesn't fit correctly

11) Don't wear anything you're not comfortable in

12) Posture matters

13) Perfume matters

14) Jewelry matters

15) Lipstick matters

16) Brassieres really matter

17) Wear shades which compliment your skin tone and hair color

18) Check the latest fashions and adjust your wardrobe accordingly

19) Coordinate your pocketbook with your shoes
